ubuntu ho! June 17, 2006

Anybody who has got iota of intrest in linux should visit
ubuntu. You can say its
just one more distribution of linux. But while in all the
other cases(that is for Fedora,SuSE, Mandrake) linux is free
as in “free speech”. But ubuntu people have made it really
free that is as in “free bread” or “free beer”…. Just
visit shipit for
ubuntu or kubuntu
(that is ubuntu with KDE, while the other one comes with
GNOME)and you can also get your free CDs shipped to your
home without asking you for anything more than your home
address!! Dont beleive it?? Just login to shipit and wait
for 4-5 weeks!!!
These are the 5 CDs that I received two days ago. And though
the live CD boots and then runs painfully slow (at least on
my P4, 2.4 GHz, with 256 MB RAM) but i guess, once you
install it on your hard disk the performance will improve a
lot. As I already have Mandrake installed, so could not
check the hard-disk version. But I really never expected the
CDs to reach my home. Especially when I can’t even get all
my copies of IEEE Spectrum, even though I have paid more
than 1200 Rs for that!!
Three cheers for ubuntu!!!

Symbian and $100 Laptop June 17, 2006

Symbian
Recently I got interested in mobile phone applications using
Java and Symbian. It surprises me how powerful (yet vastly
under-utilized) today’s tiny mobile phones are. Though Java
is more widely supported, but it can’t compare with Symbian
in the functionality and customization options that it
provides. Obviously, with Symbian you have a FULLY
FUNCTIONAL OPERATING SYSTEM on your phone!! Add to that the
power of modern RISC processors (mainly ARM based) and the
ability to utilize such wide array of features like the
mobile network, Internet, camera, voice recorder and music
players. All this makes modern mobile phones a really
amazing piece of engineering and the ease of going
under the hood to
tweak them is also unique.
Symbian as well as all the mobile phone manufacturers
provide a large variety of free (yet fully functional and
commercial quality) software that can be used to develop any
kind of application. And the best part is that you don’t
even need to own the phone for which you want to make the
program, all the manufacturers provide emulators for their
different models which can be used to test the software. I
have one application in mind and can’t wait to start working
on it! Anybody having any ideas in this regard is welcome…
$100 Laptop
Came to know about this through an article on
Howstuffworks.com. I
can’t say anything about the practicality of this project
and what impact it will have on the poor kids. But I was
wondering it will be really interesting to see what new
things can emerge when there are 100 million pieces of
machinery spread around which can communicate with each
other by making a Mobile Ad-hoc network!! No need of ISPs,
no need of mobile towers, no need of phone connection!!
Though I am not sure about the technicalities and the
limitations of such a network with respect to the data
caring capacity and the range. But in any case it looks a
very interesting scenario to me…
Visit One Laptop Per Child
website
and
wiki for more info.
And his
wikipedia article for Ad-hoc Networks.
