What is reliability? April 24, 2006

What is reliability? When will you call anything reliable?

Every time we use any electronics device, or for that matter
any product, we expect it to work reliably
at the very first and every single time after that. How will
you respond if, in between a critical call, your mobile
resets? (It has a microprocessor inside it, which means it
CAN reset
itself, though it happens rarely) Or your car doesn’t start
when you are getting late?

I will not like to be any such situation, but today I find
myself on the other side!
Will you call yourself a
good engineer
, if your product is not reliable or in
fact you yourself
are not reliable?

Today, I tried making two circuits (a stepper motor driver
and a TV remote controlled DC motor driver). Now, all that I
had to do was joining 3-4 simple off-the-shelf components
and the circuits should have worked, but no, they wont! I
checked and then re checked many times but nothing happened!

Now even after three years of experience, if I cant make
such a simple thing work (or even find whats wrong with
them) then where is the reliability in my work? It would
have been fine had this been my first time, but I have
successfully made same
circuits in past and cant even
re-produce my own
work! This is kinda shameful and frustrating also…

so buddy it can be seen like this as well that with each
failure u r learning one new concept. but yeh sab baatien

Cool morning April 20, 2006

Read the post below for the epilog to this one.

I am writing this while getting late for college,so kindly
bear with any spelling/grammatical error that skips past
MS-Word.

Back from the walk. During the good old days it was like,
walk to garden, 1 round walk, then 2-3 rounds jogging, then
8-10 pull-ups on a particularly suitable tree, then half
round walk, then 15-20 mins pranayam and finally walk back
home. But today,to save time it was walk+jog to garden, 1
round walk and then walk+jog back to home. But still it was
worth it and I wish I can take out this odd-half hour more
regularly in coming days also.

The sector next to my home has 3 back-to-back gardens. But
the biggest one is too crowded that it reminds me of
Mumbai’s local train station (I haven’t seen more people
walking together anywhere else). I particularly like the one
between the ISKCON and Alliance Francaise. It’s a small and
beautiful garden with only 5-6 people around and the best
part is the barsati choe (small rainy riverlet) flowing
right through the centre of the park. But its on the
farthest end from my place so I either I have to jog across
the first two or spend atleast one hour.

Anyways it has been a very productive morning for me, first
interfaced the RF circuit with PC, then written a post on
blog, then went for the walk, then tested the stepper
circuit, then modified and mailed the assembly program to
Duggu, washed two shirts and then again writing for blog and
the best part, still I won’t be late for college!! (Given
that I don’t spend more than 5 minutes on newspaper.)

Busy after the exams April 20, 2006

Like always, I am pretty busy right after  the exams. This
time its some work related to college robotics club. At
other times it has been some circuit or some programming or
maybe even some novel. But everytime, I am more busy after
the exam rather than before them. I guess, the blog will
have to wait for a week or so before the preparation of end-sems
start ;)

I haven’t gone for morning/evening walk for past 2-3 days
and aaj bhi nai gaya to mom will throw both me and PC out of
home. I wanna  complete this circuit of stepper motor
quickly so that I can go out for walk before mom wake up!
See you people soon…

I found this on a friend’s Orkut scrapbook,looks
interesting:

In Year 1981

1. Prince Charles got married

2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe

3. Australia lost the Ashes

4. Pope Died

In Year 2005

1. Prince Charles got married (again)

2. Liverpool crowned Champions of Europe(again)

3. Australia lost the Ashes (again)

4. Pope Died (again)

Moral of the story -

In future, if Prince Charles decides to re-marry….

Please warn the Pope!!!

Messenger misunderstandings April 14, 2006

Posted by Sumit Tada in Uncategorized
add a comment

Messengers are cool, but many times they can be troublesome,
especially when you wanna have some “serious” talk rather
than just time pass. First of all in case the connection is
slow (like mine), the messages may be received out-of-order.
This is what has happened many times with me:

Me:Hello,you there??
….
No reply from the other guy

….
Me:Busy with something??
The other guy:yup
Me:OK then bye…
TOG:Naa re wela hoon…
Me:yeh kya abhi kaha busy
ab kah raha hai wela

What happens is the other guy was replying to the first
message when I was expecting the second one and so on… In
this case MSN and Google Talk are better than Yahoo
messenger,in MSN/Google, it will notify you when the other
person doesn’t get your message, whereas in yahoo you never
know ki the person is getting your messages or not.

But many times even if messenger is faithful, still there
can be misunderstandings. Yesterday, I was chatting with one
senior. He is the head of College Robotics Club. As most
people in our college don’t like to work on “techie” things,
so he always has a tough time keeping people motivated to
work in robotics.

He had to cancel a meeting of club and wasn’t happy about
it. And at the same time there was one other common friend
online. This is what happened.

Me:Hi bhai kya haal hai…(to
the common friend)

Mukhi:Achha hoon
Me:Aur kya chal raha hai
aaj-kal??

Mukhi:Kuchhh khaas nai yaar.
Mukhi:A bit busy rite
now,chatting with Vin also..

……

In the meanwhile me and Vin(the senior) were chatting..

Vin:Yaar maine kal meeting
bulai hai..

ME:Lekin….kal to chhuti
hai!!

Vin:Oh fir to meething
cancel karni padegi..

……after few
minutes…..

Vin:Main mukhi se baat kar
raha hoon..

Me:Yeh achha hai!!
Me:Tum dono baat karte
rahoge to main kya karoonga??

Vin:OYE I AM FED UP WITH
YOU GUYS.

…..I get a shock,yeh kya
ho gaya ise…..

Vin:TUMHE KYA LAGTA HAI
MUJHE KOI KAAM NAI HAI…

…..After listening to his
furious words for few more minutes…..

Me:Yeh kya ho gaya tumhe??
Achanak itna gussa kis baat pe aa raha hai?

…..He continued with more ranting…….

10-15 minutes ke baad pata chala ki he thought I said “Yeh
achha hai” in reply to his “meeting cancel karni padegi”!!!!
He said that “main mukhi se baat kar raha hoon” part was
just a side note while the meeting wali baat was the main
topic……..Finally we decided that in future,we should
chat face-to-face only. Warna pata chala ki dono ek baat kah
rahe they lekin fir bhi ladai  ho gai!!!

Hi April 14, 2006

Disclaimer:
who says you cant have
totally useless and foolish posts on YOUR blog?? No one
naa,so here is this totally foolish post. Read at your own
risk,I have already warned you!!

What happens when you say “hi” to someone or wave
hands for someone standing at a distance and the other
person doesn’t look in your direction?? Or maybe even worse,
when you wave at someone thinking he/she is your friend but
who turns out to be some unknown??

Well, today I was on the other side of story. Today
morning, while on my usual walk, I suddenly saw one of my
classmates(whose home was nearby), coming form the other
side of road, was smiling, looking in my general direction.
Now there was one more lady walking in front of me, so I
thought maybe she (my classmate) was saying something to her
(the other lady, who looked like some kaam-wali-bai). But I
wasn’t sure, so gave back a meekish-smile. Finally the
classmate gave a-whats-wrong-with-you-cant-say-hi look and
went inside her home, before I could reach it.

Ok,it wasn’t a big deal and maybe she dint even notice it
but still I could feel that it does make you feel a bit
uncomfortable. And incidentally, few days ago,the same girl,
sitting next to me on college stairs, waved at a guy going
on the road in front. After the guy went away, giving her a
confused look, she realised he wasn’t the one she thought
him to be!!

My personal advice to her, which I myself follow is: give
some time to the other person to respond and better still,
just wait before he/she comes close enough to identify!!

P.S. (only for the
lady of our class):if you thought ki main chep ho jaoonga,
then lemme assure you, I wont, especially at 7:30 in
morning! So, no harm in pausing for a moment or two, isn’t
it??
