Lots of preparation (again… according to my standards ;) ), much better performance but the same result!!
But its life…
Though I am disappointed, but few of my friends have been much more upset than me (for one other company and slightly different reason).
Will update with more details soon. Thanks to all those who wished me luck! Hope I will perform better next time :)

testing

This is it August 9, 2006

Well finally, tomorrow I will be sitting for the company. In last 3-4 days, I have prepared well (at least according to my standards) and now I am confident that tomorrow, if the test isn’t very very difficult, then my performance will be satisfactory. Obviously, my 4 days preparation (when it should have been 1-2 months!) means that the chances of my not clearing are much more than my getting through, but still I feel that this is the most that I would have prepared anyways for anything, so this time at least I will not be feeling bad about being careless and negligent.
Though it won’t be my last chance, and in fact the companies coming after this one are paying even more and are equally (if not more) reputed, but still I will feel bad if I don’t clear the test (and then interview) tomorrow, it will be two in row and will mean that my not being prepared is not the ONLY reason for not getting through!
Let’s hope that tomorrow is my lucky day…otherwise, it will again mean more preparation and less competition for the next company :)

As was expected, I didn’t clear the test for the company (that is in college today for recruitments) but the problem is that they short listed only 7 people from our class for interview. This means they will take only 2-3 finally. That means still the competition will remain virtually same for the next company and after looking at the test today, now I know it will be very very very difficult for me in the next company (which is also core Electronics Company).
Though there is a feeling inside that why I wasted two whole months (and I still believe that I could have perform better if had prepared even a bit in holidays). But then I also know it’s nothing strange for me. In fact I am still waiting for an occasion where I can say that I had prepared very hard for this thing and now I am getting the results! Most of the times I have got results without any effort. Though in the end I always feel that I could have performed better, but mostly I have been in a comfortable enough position to justify my inaction. Let’s hope it changes soon!
Now I have to complete 2-3 books (of Digital, Analog and Verilog) in 4 days!!
Although even the above sentence shows how bleak my chances are but still everybody has a right to have dreams, how wild they may be and how undeserving they themselves may be! Let me hope that by studying for 4 days I can beat people who have been working hard for 3-4 months!!

oh! sorry about that. :(. but there will be other, better chances.

at this point i cannot go away without lecturing- just because i identify with your posts so much- i know the feeling of wasting time, then pulling it off ‘pretty well’ inspite of wasting all that time, sometimes missing it and feeling bad, and regretting, or almost scared of regretting the waste of time i indulged in.

You are right, you can do in 4 days what others did in 3 - 4 months. you just have to put your mind to it. 100%

that said, some day, this will catch up with you. and given that it’s such a competitve world out there, a little bit of discipline and dedicated effort will take you a long way, and prevent the misses from happening.

good luck, work hard. because now is the time to do so.

lekchar khatam. u may wake up now :)

Dont worry… sometimes the best ones come in the last.
You dont have to cram urself with the concepts of Verilog, if I remember correctly its like C only.. so just be ware of the logics.. thts all.

Do well in the next…:)

Rush hour August 5, 2006

A very nice networking hardware company (not Cisco) is coming to college tomorrow and as I was afraid, I am not prepared (even by my own fairly low standards). But still I don’t want to rush with the things, mainly because I am loving the book (on networking) that I am reading and secondly because if the company takes me on the basis of the knowledge of C that I have gained in 2-3 days, then I guess it will be wrong! So, I wont rush up with “Exploring C”, though will give it a look later today, just to revise a few points that I have forgotten in past 1-2 years. One bad thing that has happened is that the company has increased it package by around 50% as compared to last year, so everybody will try to get through (even if they don’t know what the company does!) which means more competition for people like me who were genuinely interested even if the package would have been much less :(
In any case, if I can get through it will be the best thing to happen, but if I can’t then it will mean that I will be better prepared for the next company and there will be fewer people to compete with next time :)

Frenzied!! August 2, 2006

Only two days of college and looks like everything has changed!! Two days ago I was complaining about being too much bored and now it seems the days are flying!
We don’t have any precise information when the next company will come to college and there’s sooooo much to study before that (now don’t start telling me that I had TWO MONTHS of totally free holidays that I have wasted!). I love the book of networking that I am currently reading, but at the same time I have an uneasy feeling that if any core-electronics company comes in next 10-15 days, I will be caught completely unprepared. Have to do C/C++, digital and analog (*sigh*) before that but I really-really don’t want to leave the networking:(
Whenever I talk about networking, the first thing people say is “Cisco ke liye padh raha hai??” And I am like what the hell, can’t I study anything that I “like” even though I know it won’t take me to some great company?? I mean, it’s true that I will love to get into Cisco, but then I also know that reading ONE book that too for 10-15 days can’t bring me at par with people who have been preparing for past 2-3 months! But then I prefer networking to say, analog, so even if I know it wont help, I still can’t leave it!!
The easy way out will be to study C/C++, OS, Data Structures and then try for some software company but somehow I don’t feel like doing it! Though I love programming but the idea of memorizing all the tricky questions (that come in most tests) and going through the same books which I had left 1-2 years ago, doesn’t look very nice to me. I will prefer learning some new language or making some kind of project (in the older ones) rather then doing all the mugging.
But then, after looking at the names of companies coming (that is, most probably coming) to college, and then hearing people talking about their preparations (and guessing about mine!!), I realize that it will be really bad on my part if I can’t get some nice offer that too when I am not doing anything else worthwhile (read it as preparing for CAT/GRE). So, as soon as I finish with the current book I will start with other topics so that at least I can give some fight on the d-day!
Then there is the issue of minor project, we have to make a team of 4 people and then decide on faculty guide and project and to me deciding on the team is looking more difficult than the project itself! There are so many conditions, A wont work with B, C wont work without D E isn’t worth taking in the team and F, G and H will only work together! Looks like whole class has been divided into groups of 2 and 3 people (and we have to make the team of exactly 4, not more not less!)
And finally, there are recruitments of robotics club, we have to decide whom to allow, decide about the questionnaire, the timings, the posters, interviews etc etc.
Lots of work but I am loving it :)

P.S: If you have any nice electronics project idea, I will be very greatful to know about it!

and as for that deciding teams issue, it can be a nice logic problem, no?

best of luck yaar. good to see you posting again. :)

Busy again :) August 1, 2006

College starts from today and unlike most of the people around me, I am too happy that finally the looooong holidays are over :) I don’t understand how and why but I hate NOT being busy!!

As I have no plans for CAT/GRE/GMAT/GATE, so the only “work” that I could do in holidays was to prepare for the placements, but getting a job offer (though not a very very nice one, but not bad also) right at the starting of the two-months holidays meant that I wont be under much pressure for that also.

The result: two month down the drain!! I know time is precious and wont get it back when its gone once but two things in my room (my PC and my bed) snatched away most of my time!

The usual time-table was like this:

Wake up at 6:00-6:30 am - net for 1 hour - khana, pina, nahana dhona - again net or game upto 1:00-2:00pm - sleep for around 1 hour - lunch - net/game on PC - sleep for 1-2 hours - walk or visit some frnd’s home for close to 1 hour - dinner - again net - sleep around 10:30-11:00pm

Now, there will be a lot of things to worry about (like the mid-sems, reports, assignments) and sometimes the schedule will also be hectic (like we have classes from 8:00 am to 5:00pm on friday :( ) and then I will also have to handle the questions like “So… for which compny are you preparing” and “Which is your dream compny”. But at any rate it will be much better than the holidays!!
